The National Center at the 2024 Borsa della Ricerca Event

Now in its 15th edition, the annually held Borsa della Ricerca took place in Catania this year by transforming the Benedictine Monastery into a massive meeting place for over 250 delegates from Italian companies, universities, startups, and PNRR projects to talk about innovation while making strategic plans to increase technology transfer and economic support for research.

Organized by the Emblema Foundation, in collaboration with the Sicilian Region and the University of Catania, the 2024 event welcomed several representatives from the National Center, including Program Manager Director Elena Quagliato, Research and Communication Manager Emanuela Roman, and Junior Innovation Manager Andrea Panaro.

Always looking towards the future, National Center representatives hosted a series of one-on-one meetings with those from pharmaceutical companies, CT companies, innovative start-ups, university spin-offs, technology transfer offices, as well as those from incubation and acceleration programs to discuss deepening the creation and development of new innovative businesses.  The matching-making concept allows the National Center to share and learn how to best secure stakeholder interests, expand international funding opportunities, identify technology transfer strategies, and define the Key Performance Indicators needed to sustain the legacy of the National Center for the next generation.

Dedicated to projects financed by the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, an exhibition area offered a schedule of workshops that allow Elena Qualiato to illustrate and present the progress of the National Center research activities. With a forward-thinking background in research management, Qualiato shared her perspectives on Wednesday 23 October by explaining the impact of supporting Gene Therapy and RNA-based Technological research on the European and national territory.

“While deeply focused on discovering groundbreaking medical treatments for disease, the National Center also offers Italy the tools needed to develop infrastructure that works to ensure the sustainability of Italy’s health care system.”  Understanding the scope of what the European Commission intended with National Recovery and Resilience Plans for the 23 Member States that they provided funding for includes identifying and addressing country-specific challenges. “Italy is in dire need of scaling up collapsing infrastructures, especially those in the southern region, which is why 40% of National Center funding includes building new or retrofitting old structures with state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities such as the Gene Therapy Center and RNA Production Platform. The National Center also focuses on improving historic territorial fragmentation by allowing researchers from across the country to take advantage of partnering facilities such as the Bari Computing Centre for Science, we also support technologically advanced entrepreneurial initiatives while promoting higher education through a national doctorate and the PharmaTech Academy.”

The 3-day event will end on Wednesday 23 with the awarding of the BdR Awards, prizes intended for start-ups and spin-offs to valorize the commitment and research of high-tech companies. Awards are presented by Barilla, Fortinet, Giuliani, NTET Group, Open Fiber, and Webuild.
