Spoke 5 – Inflammatory and Infectious Diseases
Led by the University of Siena, Spoke 5 coordinates activities related to RNA-based technologies in Infectious and Inflammatory Diseases.
Spoke 5 coordinates the work of eight institutions that specialize in inflammatory and infectious diseases, immune responses, as well as coding and non-coding RNA strategies. Experts in these fields include those from Humanitas University, the University of Florence, the University of Milan, the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Padua, the University of Rome Tor Vergata, the University of Siena, and the University of Verona.
Treating and preventing inflammatory and infectious diseases has well proven effective thanks to the production of vaccines with mRNA-based technology, most notably the COVID-19 vaccines. Antigens found on the surface of cells tell our immune system whether something in our bodies is harmful or not. Some antigens are encoded by the cell itself while others occur as foreign matters such as bacteria and viruses.
